85 years ago

The Yorkshire Farmers’ Bacon Factory Ltd, became a hot topic of discussion during a House of Commons speech.

Mr Glossop the Conservative candidate for Penistone asked the Minister of Agriculture if he was aware that the Yorkshire Farmers’ Bacon Factory Ltd, was likely to go into voluntary liquidation.

Sir John Gilmour, the Minister of Agriculture, responded by pointing out that future of the factory was receiving careful consideration by all.

The Duke of York paid an informal visit to Huddersfield to inspect the textile mill of Broadhead and Graves Ltd, and lay the foundation stone of the Royal Infirmary’s £70,000 extension.

And some 15 houses in Wilson’s Yard, Layerthorpe, York, were the subject of a public inquiry held by the Ministry of Health.

During the meeting the corporation asked for demolition orders, on the grounds that the properties were unfit for human habitation.

50 years ago

Mrs Mackenzie, from York, was faced with a tantalising choice, after winning the Mark the Ball contest, whether to choose between a Morris Mini deluxe or £550 in cash.

After a chat with her family, she decided to take the money.

The Master of the York Gild of Freeman, Mr John J Kaye had relinquished his duties due to ill-health.

His place was to be taken by Senior Past Master of the Gild, Mr W N Piercy.

Statistics showed that the Castle Folk Museum in York had become a great success.

Thought to be Britain’s second youngest museum, opening in 1938, figures had shown that the museum had 660,000 people visit in 1966.

20 years ago

Three North Yorkshire dogs had won top prizes at Crufts.

Border Terrier Ramsey Pipistrelle, from Bishopthorpe beat off 23 entries to win the Open Dog category.

And Mrs Walkley who lived near York was celebrating after her Dandie Dinmont Terrier named Champion Healaval Gigmaleerie At Follycott scooped first prize in the Special Veteran Dog category.

Regulars at The Blacksmith’s Arms, Huntington, raised £2,500 in memory of their friend, Mr Dave Adams.

Led by his wife Sue, customers held car boot sales, a coffee morning for shoppers and other events over 18 months to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Dinosaurs were making a comeback at the Yorkshire Museum in York, thanks to Steven Spielberg’s summer blockbuster The Lost World.
