ACCIDENTS will be monitored on a busy Yorkshire road, following a petition by worried residents.

More than 1,000 people signed the petition calling for a roundabout to be built on the Wilberfoss west junction on the A1079, east of York, which was presented to East Riding of Yorkshire Council last month.

Wilberfoss Parish Council launched the petition, with an online version attracting 1,060 signatures, and 200 people signing a hard copy which was passed to East Riding Cllr Andy Strangeway to hand to County Hall.

David Smith, parish council vice chairman, told The Press in February: “There have been enough minor accidents now to warrant action before there is a fatality.

“It’s an accident blackspot.”

Mr Smith said the introduction of a roundabout would improve safety on the road, but an ERYC spokesman said there were no immediate plans for a roundabout.

This week, it was announced that ERYC would work with the parish council for the next year, to monitor crashes and accidents at the site, and look at the need for further road safety improvements.

Cllr Andy Strangeway, who called for the assistance, said he was pleased residents’ concerns had been taken seriously.

He said: “It is imperative that a true record of the accidents at the Western/A1079 Wilberfoss junction is established to allow for an informed decision to take place with regards any safety improvements that may be required.

“Wilberfoss Parish Council and ERYC officers will work closely together over the next twelve months to monitor any accidents. The importance of safe roads within the East Riding can never be underestimated.

“I am sure that local residents will now rest assured that their safety concerns are being listened to by ERYC.”
