ANOTHER York pub is facing closure after its owners revealed they are selling the building to a care home firm.

Pub giant Marstons has confirmed it has agreed to sell Carlton Tavern on Acomb Road, but has not shed any light on when doors will close for the last time.

A Marston’s spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have accepted an offer from Crown Care and are currently in negotiations surrounding the development of the site of the Carlton Tavern pub.

“We are continuing to operate as usual and the pub will remain open until further plans have been approved.”

On February 15, a consultation event was held at Poppleton Road Memorial Hall, to tell people in the area about the plan.

However locals have complained that many who live near the pub were not invited and so missed the chance to have their say.

Crown Care have confirmed their plans are to demolish the pub and build a new 79 bedroom home, which they say will create 100 new jobs.

The company said the plans had been “well received” by people at the consultation event.

Managing director Denise Stephenson added: “Crown Care prides itself on providing thriving homes with a philosophy of care that puts the needs of our residents at the centre of everything we do and how we do it.”

“We consulted the local community in the area surrounding the site prior to the application being submitted.

“The scope of the community consultation has both met with, and exceeded, the recommendations of local and national planning policies and legislation. The opinions of these consulted have been considered within the evolution of the proposal put forward by this application.”

Once plans were approved Crown Care would be working towards opening the home in the summer of 2018 and staff recruitment would begin early next year.

The Carlton Tavern site is very close to former City of York Council run care home Oakhaven. When its closure was first announced in 2015, council care managers said they wanted to see the site developed into sheltered or extra care housing for older people.
