A WOMAN from York ended up with a very special birthday present, as she delivered her own grandson.

Adele Price’s daughter Jess was six days overdue when she went into labour at just after 6am on February 24 - Adele’s 48th birthday.

Adele was asleep on Jess’ sofa at her home in St Stephen's Road, Acomb, when she realised what was happening.

She said: “We took her to hospital at 2.30am on Thursday because the contractions were quite strong but not evenly spaced out. She went home to bed and I was asleep on the sofa but the next thing her partner Barry rushed downstairs at 6.30am saying she’s having the baby.”

Jess, 23, said: “She really wanted him to arrive on her birthday, I share my gran’s birthday so it was nice for him to be born on her birthday.

“I was a bit scared when I realised what was happening, because I was at home and didn’t know what to expect. I’ve had three children previously, but it was completely different, I didn’t know what to expect. Mum’s never done it before so it made me panic a bit to be honest, but she did really well.”

Louie was due on February 17, and as each day passed, Adele realised she might share his birthday, but said she never expected she would be the one to deliver him.

She took instructions over the phone from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service on how to safely deliver Louie, who arrived weighing nine pounds two ounces and is the youngest of four children - Ava, seven, Calum, six, and Ella, aged four.

Adele said: “The chap on the other end of the phone was absolutely fantastic. He was very calm and calmed me down. It felt incredible, I never expected I would be doing that. You can’t put it into words, you really can’t.”

Dr David Macklin from the ambulance service, said: “Adele followed the instructions of call handler Taryne Davey perfectly to ensure the safe delivery of her new grandson.

“It is very satisfying for our staff when they can use their skills and expertise, not just to help save lives, but to bring new lives into the world. Helping to deliver a healthy baby is an extremely rewarding experience and I know that Taryne was absolutely thrilled to be part of this very special event.”

Adele said: “I was keeping my fingers crossed he would arrive on my birthday, but wasn’t expecting it to be like that, it’s the best birthday present ever.

“It was an absolutely amazing experience. It was scary because it’s a new life coming into the world even when you have a baby with a midwife around you, and Jess was a bit scared but it was amazing and once his little head was there and moving and next thing he was there. I cleaned him up and popped him on her stomach and that’s when the ambulance turned up.”

Jess said: “It’s definitely special, it’s only a one-time experience, that she got to deliver her grandson on her birthday. I don’t think you can top that as a birthday present, can you?”
