A “FIX-IT cafe”, swap shop, food waste workshop and composting campaign are just some of the projects in line for thousands of pounds in grants from the city council in York.

A £30,000 community recycling fund has been set up by City of York Council, and the 18 projects getting anything from £40 to £5000 has been released.

Cllr Andrew Waller, the authority’s executive member for the environment, said: “We’re delighted to have received so much interest in this fund from such a wide range of different community projects. This will really help these communities and groups reduce waste and encourage re-use.

“By providing the funding we are enabling them to get their campaigns off the ground, which will really help us to create a more sustainable and resilient One Planet York and make York the Greenest City in the North.”

Some 21 groups applied for funding, and 11 will get the full amount they asked for. Those include Bell Farm Residents Association, which bid for £2,500 for weekly food sharing and “food from waste” club, and a monthly swap shop.

Archbishop Holgate’s School is to get £5,000 for a bike repair and reuse project, while Tang Hall centre bid for, and is being awarded, £5,000 to create a green community centre to encourage recycling, composting and reuse.

Meanwhile seven groups are to get part of the funds they bid for, including St Nicks which is getting £2,243 to pilot a “York Fix-It” cafe project running workshops and drop-in sessions to stop things being sent to landfill by helping people repair or upcycle them instead.

York Nurturing Community (YNC) is getting £250 to set up a larder and pop-up cafe project running events through 2017 to reuse and reduce food waste.

Funding for Poppleton Memorial Hall could help to install energy efficient measures in the hall and promote recycling and reuse of items by hall users; while York Community Furniture Store is getting £2500 to extend its activities.
