85 years ago

Trout fishing was in full swing in the Thirsk area with two local anglers having success in catching a half-pound chub.

Wiske was considered to be in good condition but the Swale and Codbeck were still however low and clear.

Strong protests were made at a meeting of the Easingwold Rural Council against the withdrawal by the Traffic Commissioners of the licences of several casual bus services.

Speaking at the meeting chairman Mr G Knowles said: “a serious injustice and inconvenience had been caused to rural communities by the withdrawal of casual bus facilities. The Council should support a circular resolution, as it will be for the freedom of the future.”

As one of the residents in Easingwold wanted to lose their transportation to concerts, whist drives, dances and similar functions, which had become a recognised feature of the social life of country districts.

Lord Snowden, sporting a beard of several weeks’ growth, left Japan secretly to join Princess Margaret on holiday in the Bahamas.

In an interview with Lord Snowden on Japanese television, a commentator said the beard was a disguise to shield him from publicity during his photographic assignment in Japan for The Sunday Times.

Yorkshire Scouts had started preparing a three-acre site by the River Ouse, near Easingwold, for a Scout canoeing and sailing centre.

The site, at Aldwalk Bridge comprised of 200 yards of river bank, an old mill and several outbuildings.

The scouts planned to do most of the work themselves. Crown Prince Carl Gustaf of Sweden had denied reports in European newspapers linking him romantically with Princess Anne.

“There’s nothing to that,” he said. “I met her, but nothing more,” he said in Honolulu.

Supermarket chain Kwik Save was to press ahead with the closure of its store at Haxby, York, despite a petition from 2,000 local people pleading for it to be kept open.

Residents launched their plea after learning that the store was on a “hit list” of 107 outlets around the country earmarked for closure.

Fred’s Home Bakery, in Albemarle Road, South Bank, York, one of three shops run by Fred Thomas, had been nominated for the Evening Press Support Your Local Shop Campaign.

The firm employed 25 workers with many starting work at 4am to make sure the bread was fresh.
