GREEN-FINGERED youngsters have got their hands dirty to plant trees in a village near York.
Members of the Headlands Community Primary School’s Wild Gardening Club, along with members of the Churchfield Open Space Committee, met to plant willow, hazel and dog rose saplings at Willow Garth, in Wigginton’s Churchfield, a public open space.
It is hoped the initiative will be just the start of regular events bringing all ages together in Haxby and Wigginton.
Andy Mulholland, who runs the Wild Garden Club at Headlands, in Haxby, said: “The children enjoyed the planting and sharing some spare saplings from school with the local community, this event really shows the values held by our school.
“As many of the children use Churchfield Open Space to play in I hope they will develop a sense of ownership for the area helping nature thrive and looking after it for the future.”
