STORM Doris led to the cancellation of train services in York and the removal of some of the encampments. set up in York city centre as part of Jorvik Viking Festival.

But York and North Yorkshire appeared to escape the worst of the gales which affected some other parts of the country, with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service saying it had two weather-related call-outs this afternoon.

A fire crew from Acomb attended a car wash in Danebury Drive, Acomb, to secure a loose canopy caused by high winds, while Tadcaster firefighters made safe an aerial hanging from the roof of a property in Leeds Road, Tadcaster.

Transpennine Express services between York and Newcastle were cancelled this morning because of the high winds, with customers travelling on this part of the route asked to use services operated by Virgin Trains (East Coast) and Cross Country Trains.

"Arrangements have been made for your tickets to be accepted on these trains," it said.

Due to the forecast high winds, the Viking Festival's encampment in Coppergate and the small encampments in Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square were taken down.

Pedestrians battled to stay on their feet near York Minster, where a notorious wind tunnel effect is created during gales.
