ALTHOUGH I agree with the general sentiments of the Green Party’s proposal to have a referendum on a 10 per cent council tax rise (The Press, February 21), I don’t believe this solution is achievable.

It is highly unlikely local residents are going to agree to such a hike.

There is a real crisis in social care, but it is the responsibility of the national government to sort this mess out.

They have repeatedly cut council budgets each year since 2010, so is there little wonder we are now in such a mess with local funding.

If taxes are to be raised it should be on a national level and done by a fair means based on the ability to pay.

A start would be to return the 50p tax rate the Government cut when they came into power. This handout was done despite an increasing national debt.
