THE resignation of the Chief Constable of Humberside Police has been welcomed by a major union.

UNISON, which represents policing staff across the country, said the decision by Justine Curran to step down and allow a new Chief Constable to take over would allow the force “to tackle the issues facing our members, force and communities”.

Tony Green, branch secretary, said: “Whilst the decision to step down by Justine Curran will no doubt have been a difficult one it is a decision our members will welcome after a turbulent few years under her leadership. The force is left facing many challenges including those identified by recent HMIC reports and by the staff survey conducted by the Police and Crime Commissioner showing a lack of confidence in the leadership of the organisation. Challenges compounded by a severely reduced workforce and increased demand. We believe this is a real opportunity to change the mood of the workforce in Humberside Police and engage with staff.” Deputy Chief Constable Garry Forsyth will act as interim Chief Constable until Ms Curran is replaced.
