A MAN has been taken to hospital with burns to his face and head following a car fire in Thornton-le-Dale.

The blaze started in the vehicle on a driveway at a house in Aunums Close on the southern edge of the town.

Fire crews were called at 12.06 to the incident. A fire engine from Pickering arrived at the scene at 12.16, and crews used two hose reels to fight the fire.

The car was a three-wheeled Reliant Robin. The fire is believed to have started through an electrical fault in the engine.

A fire service spokesperson said that the car was completely destroyed in the blaze.

Damage was also done to "another vehicle and a plastic fascia" and heat damage was also done to the window of a nearby property.

The man was given first aid treatment by fire crews at the scene until an ambulance arrived.

An air ambulance attended but the man's injuries were such that he could be taken to hospital by road ambulance.

The fire spokesperson said that crews were on site for just over an hour.
