STUDENTS at a York school enjoyed a fun session covering the science of bridge building when they received a visit from renowned engineers, including the celebrated Richard Gibbon OBE.
Working in teams, Year 7 pupils at Millthorpe School took part in a competition to create a bridge structure that could carry the largest weight before destruction.
Students learnt key engineering principles like compression, tension and torsion while making their bridges out of simple materials.
With Richard's input, the teams created bridges that could carry more than 15 kilograms of weight.
Before retirement, Richard was chief engineer at the National Railways Museum.
During the session he shared stories about his life working in the railway industry and the careers available to young people today.
