85 years ago

A dinner was held at the Royal Station Hotel, York, to welcome Mr and Mrs Seebohm Rowntree on their return from South America.

Special guests included the Lady Mayoress of York Mrs Morrell, the Lord Mayor of York Alderman R H Vernon Wragge and the Sheriff of York Mr Arnold Rowntree.

Competitors took part in York City Rowing Club’s Regatta on the river in York.

The City club’s senior eight were unfortunately beaten by Leeds University by a length and a half.

Not dismayed by the defeat, the York oarsmen went on to then take part in the Head of the River Championship on the Thames.

The High Sheriff’s trumpeters sounded a fanfare during a procession held in honour of the opening the City Assize in the Guildhall, York.

During a breakfast Mr Justice Charles, addressed the guests with a speech congratulating the city on its immunity from serious crime.

50 years ago

Killer dogs had driven seven in-lamb ewes to their death in a ditch on the Salton Grange Farm, Kirkbymoorside. The ewes had been suffocated, and one had all of its wool torn off.

A shocked Mr Dobson reported that shortly after 9 o’clock he had heard dogs barking in a pasture near the farm and had gone to investigate, only to find the mass slaughter.

The new £148,000 Holy Family Roman Catholic secondary school at Carlton near Selby, had passed its second inspection by West Yorkshire education authorities with flying colours and was due to open in a week.

The Beatles' new double-sided single, Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields For Ever jumped straight to third in the New Musical Express and Melody Maker charts.

River levels were continuing to rise in York, following the night’s heavy rain and gale force winds.

Environment Agency officials were expecting the Ouse to reach its peak between 3pm and 5pm.

The storms which swept the country claimed the lives of six people and brought an imminent threat of flooding in North Yorkshire.
