YORK Guildhall Orchestra welcomes the return of piano soloist Peter Donohoe for the second concert of its 2016-2017 season at York Barbican tonight.

Donohoe will be joining the orchestra for Rachmaninov's Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini. "Rachmaninov, like many composers, admired the popular 24th Caprice for solo violin by Paganini, to the extent that he decided to write his own version of the work for full orchestra and piano," says conductor Simon Wright.

"It's full of the sprightly flights of notes that everyone knows from the original, but converted into something that's unmistakably Rachmaninov, including his famous Dies Irae theme."

Tonight's 7.30pm programme opens with Elgar's Cockaigne Overture and also features Sibelius's Symphony No 4 and Rimsky Korsakov's Capriccio Español.

"The orchestra continues its journey through the major compositions of Jean Sibelius, this time his fourth symphony, perhaps one of his darker works," says Wright. "To end the concert, we will all let our hair down in the brilliant orchestral showpiece by Rimsky-Korsakov that will feature Fiona Love, the orchestra’s leader, in the solo violin part of Capriccio Español."

Tickets are available on 0844 854 2757, at yorkbarbican.co.uk, in person from the Barbican box office or on the door.
