FULFORD Golf Club’s Charlie Thornton won the Portuguese Collegiate Open by a sizeable seven shots.
One-handicapper Thornton, who topped the England Golf Boys’ Order of Merit in 2016, was the only player to post a level-par finish on the Robert Trent Jnr course at Sintra’s Penha Longa Golf Resort.
The competition was open to players aged 21-and-under with a five handicap or better and Thornton’s consistency saw him post rounds of 72-70-74 to extend his three-shot, second-day lead over nearest rival Emil Guldbrandt Pedersen, of Denmark.
At the end of the first day, the 18-year-old, North Yorkshire ace was third – two shots behind Finland’s Alex Hietala.
