A TRAFFIC action group is holding a meeting to draw up plans for bringing about lasting change in two Ryedale towns.

Campaigners from Action on Traffic – Malton and Norton want to put its proposals to North Yorkshire County Council and Thirsk & Malton MP Kevin Hollinrake.

Chairman Jason Aldrich said: “Recent traffic chaos in both towns has been down to roadworks, changed road priorities and now gas main repair work.

"We want to talk about our proposals for lasting improvements to traffic congestion issues in the town that will have an impact on congestion and pollution levels.

“We want people to come along and contribute to the discussion so that we can draw up an agreed plan that we will then present to the county council and the MP and lobby to get the measures put in place.”

He added: “Our last meeting came up with some really positive proposals, many of which would not be costly or take very long to deliver. Now we want to galvanise them into a plan on paper that we can take forward”.

Councillor Di Keal, whose Ryedale district ward has been at the centre of recent traffic chaos in Norton, added: “Because of the increased rail service that will start in 2019, the district council is already working with the county council and rail operators to look at some solutions to the traffic issues we have in Norton and Malton which could be made worse by the improved service.

“This is an ideal opportunity to look at potential changes to road priorities, traffic signals and other measures that could help reduce congestion and we must get local people’s views heard on these issues, which is what Action on Traffic is all about.”

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, at 7pm, at Norton Town Council offices in Commercial Street, Norton.
