THE Cranberries are to play York Barbican on May 27 with strings attached on their Greatest Hits Tour.

The Irish band will perform the likes of Linger, Zombie and Dreams in specially orchestrated acoustic versions with each spring show featuring a string quartet.

The Cranberries formed in Limerick City, Southern Ireland, in 1990 with a line-up of vocalist Dolores O'Riordan, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler, who enjoyed a meteoric rise to global success with their trademark fusion of indie guitars and O'Riordan's Celtic-tinged lilting vocals.

They have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, led off by their 1993 debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We selling five million copies in the United States and topping the charts in Britain and several territories across the world. It re-entered the UK charts in 1994 at number one, making The Cranberries one of only four acts to achieve this feat. In 2016, the band received a BMI award for three million radio plays in the USA for Linger.

Their further albums were No Need To Argue in 1994; To The Faithful Departed in 1996; Bury The Hatchet in 1999, Wake Up And Smell The Coffee in 2001 and Roses in 2012.

Tickets are on sale at £47 and £40 on 0844 854 2757, at yorkbarbican.co.uk or in person from the Barbican box office.
