YORK’S first ever university versus college sports varsity challenge takes place today.

The event, similar to the renowned varsity rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge, will be between York St John University and the University of York’s James College.

The one-day tournament will be at York St John’s multi-million pound sports park on Haxby Road, where a variety of James College sports clubs will compete against their York St John counterparts.

York St John’s new 57-acre sports site includes a 3G-pitch, four badminton courts, a sprint track, netball and tennis courts. Among the range of sports being played at the Varsity fixture are rugby union, hockey and badminton, as well as three netball teams and two football teams, providing plenty of opportunities for either team to take home the title.

James College has a strong reputation for sporting excellence, making them worthy opponents.

But York St John Students’ Union President Laurie Illingworth says: “We’re in it to win it at York St John, but for anyone who’s ever wondered which university has the best sports teams, now’s your chance to find out. It’s going to be an historic occasion – bring it on!”

The fixtures are open to the public from 12.30pm.
