A FARMERS’ market was back in York yesterday, almost seven months after local producers last had a dedicated market in the city.

Yorkshire Farmers’ Markets has taken over the event in York, and on Friday around 20 stalls set up in St Sampson’s Square.

The company, which already runs markets in Wetherby, Harrogate, Otley and Knaresborough, has struck a deal with Make it York to run the markets on the first Friday of every month.

Chris Price, Make it York’s city centre and markets manager, said they were delighted to see the Farmers’ Market back in York.

“This new monthly market will complement the Shambles Market as well as the new Shambles Food Court, offering hot street food to enjoy with friends,” he added.

Dean Hullah, of Tancred Farm Shop, was among the traders back at the new market yesterday.

He said: “We have definitely been smiled on by someone with the weather.

“We have been busy, and a lot of our regular customers have not forgotten us. The people in charge have been very helpful as well.”

He added: “There aren’t as many stalls as the previous market, but it’s going to take a bit of building back up.”

The farmers’s market will be in St Samspon’s Square on the first Friday of every month, from 9am to 4pm. Full details at www.yorkshirefarmersmarkets.co.uk
