Banstead Athletic 0 Carshalton Athletic 1

Banstead and Carshalton Athletic met for a pre-season friendly in sweltering heat at Merland Rise on Saturday.

The teams are due to meet in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on September 1 and Banstead manager Bob Langford will have been pleased with his sides first half effort.

Gary Whelan and Mark Leahy looked strong in defence, while up front Michael Beale, Kevin Webb and Simon Jobe linked up well to fully test the Robins defence.

Chances were limited in the heat, however Jobe got in quickly behind the Robins defence to force Searle to come out and make a fine block save. Costello, advancing from half-way, tested Shimell with an on-target shot which the keeper saved well.

Ten minutes from half-time Searle made two very good saves low down at the foot of both uprights, first from Akkaya then from Beale.

Early in the second half Shimell did well to keep out two close range efforts in quick succession, and from the impressive Byron Glasgows cross the keeper turned the ball away to Kinch who miscued his shot at goal.

The Robins had most of the possession in the second half as Bansteads attacks wilted in the heat and both managers used all of their substitutes at frequent intervals.

Kevin Webb squandered a good chance to give Banstead the lead before the Robins struck in the 86th minute. Mark Thomas drilled a free kick on the edge of the box past Bansteads wall and keeper Adam Deadman.

*Carshalton drew 1-1 with Crawley Town at Colston Avenue on Tuesday in a memorial match for former Supporters Club president Ron Dives who died in June.

Carshalton took the lead on 25 minutes when Denver McKenzie flicked the ball over the advancing Crawley keeper and into the net. But Crawley levelled on 39 minutes Stewart Holmes knocked in a rebound.

The dispute between Carshalton and Aldershot over the transfer fee of goalkeeper Stuart Searle was settled by an FA Tribunal on Monday.

Carshalton made a four figure offer for the goalkeeper. However, Aldershot were holding out for a five figure sum. After hearing evidence, the tribunal fixed a fee of £2,500.
