I SEE YOU by The xx is one of those albums that will likely get better with each listen, but thankfully is also wonderful on the first spin.

Opener Dangerous is a moody but surprising foot-tapper with elements of Faithless: all electronic beats, male and female simultaneous vocals and wide open soundscapes.

Say Something Loving begins like a Beach Boys vocal - though actually a sample of Alessi - before returning to a bass-led back and forth between Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft.

Elsewhere, the heartbreaking Performance is a stand-out, and while it feels like a relaxed album, it's one with intense vocals and sparse electronic musical instrumentation that veers between ominous and joyful, completely altering the mood between dark intensity and upbeat dance anthem within seconds in a way most artists would envy.

If there's a downside, it's that this indecision on mood makes it difficult to pinpoint a tone on first listen at least, but there's no denying this is an exciting release by a talented act, and one which practically demands attention for all the right reasons - not to shock, but to appreciate.
