THE more outlandish side of hair and beauty design went on show at York racecourse last night as college students got to display their skill.

The York College Hair and Beauty competition, held at in the Knavesmire Stand saw more than 200 full and part-time hairdressing and beauty therapy students competing in ten different categories; Fantasy Hair & Beauty, 1st Year Blow Dry, Team Bridal, Vintage Hollywood Make-up, Level 3 Skills Challenge, Evening Style, Advanced Make-up Artistry, Wall Street Crash (media make-up cuts/injuries), 1920s – 1940s Era.

Jayne Laverick, head of division for hair and beauty said: “This annual competition gives students an opportunity to showcase their skills and demonstrate what they have learnt in the college’s training salons and in local hair and beauty salons, where many of them work as apprentices.

“Judged by local employers, students work under strict competition conditions to showcase their creativity, producing work of a very high standard. I congratulate all the competitors.”

The event was free and open to the general public. York College particularly invites prospective students to attend the event. Winning students compete in a regional heat in Gateshead and those winners progress to national finals in Blackpool in March.
