A HOTEL in York is one of the most romantic in the UK, according to TripAdvisor’s latest set of awards.

The online review site’s 2017 Travellers’ Choice awards were announced this morning, and York’s St Denys hotel has come out with glowing reviews.

The independently-run hotel off Walmgate has been named the fifth most romantic hotel in the whole of the UK, and has also scooped the 14th spot in a ranking of UK hotels for best service.

The hotel, which is owned and run by sisters Maria and Sophie Scott, is currently undergoing a major refit and behind the scenes, and will soon have its named changed to The Parisi Hotel.

The sisters, who bought the hotel out of administration three years ago, and have been gradually transforming it ever since, said it was amazing to get the accolade from their guests reviews.

Maria, who trained as a scientist before turning to the hotel business, said: “It’s such a buzz when you check people out, and they have had a lovely time.”

Sophie added: “To be recognised by the guests is amazing, it’s a real tribute to the staff here who work very hard and really care about the guests.”

They chose the new name after learning a little about the area’s history, she added.

“This area has lots of little echoes of Paris, St Denis is the patron saint of Paris, and we read about a tribe called the Parisi who lived in the East Riding around the time of the Romans.”

TripAdvisor spokesman Hayley Coleman said: “Unlike other hospitality awards, these are based on feedback from actual guests over the past year, which is what makes them so prized within the industry.

“With rooms at winning hotels notorious for selling out shortly after our annual announcement, travellers wishing to experience these world class hotels for themselves will need to book quickly if they want to find out why they earned such rave reviews throughout the year from fellow travellers.”

The announcement also included a major accolade for a Yorkshire seaside B&B. South Lodge Guest House in Bridlington has been named third best in the world, and second in Europe and the UK.

In Flamborough, the North Star Hotel was ranked among the top 25 bargain hotels, and other hotels and B&Bs across North Yorkshire hotels have also scooped prizes.

Rudding Park Hotel in Follifoot has been named the UK’s eighth top hotel and also ranks 17th in the best service category; while The Grange bed and breakfast in Robin Hood’s Bay has ranked 18th across the whole of Europe in the B&B category and seventh in the UK.
