RESIDENTS have slammed Virgin Media after workers left parts of South Bank an eyesore with uneven and messy pavements.

The internet giant has been accused of taking no care over their work as they continue to spend weeks installing fibre optic cables in the city.

Matthew Elliott, of South Bank, contacted The Press after becoming tired of the streets close to his home.

“It’s disgusting,” he said.

“I was walking on Richardson Street with my son and the workers have not filled in any of the gaps and many of the slabs are broken.

“If you were to walk down Richardson Street to Rowntree Park, on one side alone I counted 50 broken paving slabs which are broken in half causing them to lift.”

Mr Elliott has been angered by the mess and believes the taxpayer will have to eventually foot the bill for the repairs.

He added: “City of York Council is going to have to put this right at everybody else’s cost.”

This is not the first time Virgin Media have been criticised for their work.

The Press reported in May that Cllr Mark Warters said pavements had been reinstated in a ‘shoddy’ way after fibre optic cables were laid elsewhere in York.

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “We endeavour to minimise disruption to the local communities.

“And we work with our contractors to ensure that work is carried out with professionalism and at the highest standard.

“In the case of South Bank in York, we apologise to the local residents for any inconvenience.

“We have been working hard to resolve their concerns by reinstating the pavements affected.”
