DEMONSTRATORS hung a banner proclaiming ‘build bridges not walls’ from Ouse Bridge in York as part of a protest on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration.

It was one of an estimated 150 banners hung from bridges across the UK at noon on Friday, organised by the Bridges Not Walls campaign group - a reference to Trump’s pledge to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.

York Global Justice Now did the banner drop on Ouse Bridge to send a message of hope, asking people to join them and “show that York rejects messages of division and hatred”.

Among the group was Tom Franklin, co-chair, and Bethan Vincent, vice-chair, of York Green Party who also took to St Helen’s Square to campaign and stand up for a peaceful society.

On Saturday, a women’s unity march ‘against the politics of fear and hate’, will start at St Michael le Belfrey Church at noon. Men are invited too.
