YORKSHIRE are already considering a plan 'B' after overseas signing Peter Handscomb impressed on his one-day international debut for Australia on Thursday.

Handscomb was recruited last month with a view to him being available for the vast majority of the forthcoming county campaign.

Although he had broken into the Test team with a bang before the county announced the signing, he had yet to break into the international limited overs arena.

But, on the back of injuries to Mitch Marsh and Chris Lynn, the 25-year-old was drafted in for Thursday’s clash with Pakistan in Perth and scored a polished 82.

There is now every chance he will be selected in Australia’s squad for this summer’s Champions Trophy in England between June 1 and 18.

That would also open up the possibility of things such as training camps or restriction of workload either side of the tournament.

“It’s very relevant, and we are now trying to find out from Cricket Australia what the implications are for us,” admitted Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket.

“We’re trying to find out the implications, then we’ll deal with it accordingly. It is a concern.

“There are a few potential options open to us but, until we know what we need and when, it’s difficult to get into negotiations with anybody.”

Handscomb has now scored 481 runs from five matches for Australia (eight innings) across Test and ODI cricket, including two hundreds and three further 50s.

“Well, we thought it was a great signing!” quipped Moxon.

“He’s done really, really well. It’s obviously great for him, and we’re pleased personally for him. But it’s disappointing from our point of view.

“Now, we’re not really sure how it leaves us.

“It just shows the difficulty you have in this day and age when you try to get top-quality players. It’s very frustrating.”
