BOWLING greens and croquet lawns in York are to be handed over to the community groups that use them.

City of York Council has drawn up leases for some greens, which are set to be confirmed next week. A 25-year-lease is proposed for clubs using West Bank Park, Glen Gardens Bowling Green, Clarence Gardens and a 99-year lease will be granted for Scarcroft Green Bowling Green and Croquet Lawns to Scarcroft Green Association, all at peppercorn rents.

If granted, maintenance equipment will be handed over to the club. Site-specific equipment will be allocated to those sites and more widely-useful kit will be shared with training for its use provided as part of the handover.

The council is looking at management options for allotment sites. Voluntary groups already manage Heworth tennis courts and Rowntree Park and fishing facilities at Rawcliffe Lake and Chapman’s Pond.
