MEMBERS of York’s oldest horticultural show have appealed to green-fingered residents for help.

The Ancient Society of York Florists is thought to be the oldest horticultural show and society in the world and will celebrate its 250th anniversary next year.

Bishopthorpe councillor John Galvin is secretary of the organisation, and said the group is hoping to attract new members and assistants, and appealed to plant-loving residents to find out more.

Cllr Galvin said the group had lost a number of members in recent years, and volunteers who were willing to commit to helping with a handful of shows each year would be welcome at this month’s AGM.

He said: “We want to get more people involved in the oldest society and helping to do something big for the anniversary and we need as much help as possible to do that.”

Changes to the group this year include a new location for its meetings and events, after more than 12 years at Askham Bryan College.

Cllr Galvin said: “The gym was big enough but the location wasn’t ideal for us, even though the college have always been terribly supportive and helpful.

“We’ve decided we have got to move into more central location where there are more people, so we are moving this year to Wigginton Recreation Hall. It’s a good hall, a good size, good facilities, car park and on a bus route. We’re hoping that by doing that we will get more people through the door.”

The society’s annual general meeting will be held next Friday, January 27, at the recreation hall from 8pm, and Cllr Galvin said the invitation was open to anyone who wanted to find out more about taking part.

He also said the society wanted to plan “something special” for the group’s 250th anniversary in 2018.

Cllr Galvin said: “It would be lovely to have someone computer savvy for a start, who can help with the admin side of things.”
