TRIBUTES have been paid to Methodist minister Reverend Denys Terry, who was also a teacher at Fulford High School.

Rev Terry died at his home in Burn, near Selby, after a short illness at the age of 88.

Born in Keighley, Rev Terry attended Bradford Grammar School, and later the Hartley Victoria College and Manchester University studying theology.

Rev Terry was ordained in 1953 in Reepham, Norfolk, and after service at Hackworth and Stratford took up a teaching post at Fulford High School in 1970, where he taught Religious Education and English.

He retired from the school in 1987 due to ill health, and took up a post as minister at Hambleton Methodist Chapel, where he served for 12 years, and later preached at various chapels in the Selby circuit.

Christine Gamble, Burn Chapel steward, said: “Denys was a true gentleman, wasn’t outspoken, but when he spoke he held your attention with ease. He always had time to help and was a great listener. His deep knowledge of his faith and beliefs will be missed by many people in Burn.”

Beryl Phillipson, a member of the congregation at Burn Chapel, said: “I was sad when Denys died. He will be a great loss to the village and surrounding area. He was a rock you could rely on for everything, God bless him.”
