BALLOONS will be released in York on Monday to mark the 8th birthday of Katie Rough.

Her family, friends, well-wishers, local businesses and the community will combine for the occasion.

Katie died last Monday after being found with severe injuries behind Alness Drive, Woodthorpe.

A statement issued on behalf of her family said: "On Monday 16th January, Katie Rough's family and friends would like to invite the community to remember Katie's 8th birthday.

"Katie was a beautiful, creative and special little girl who will be extremely missed by all who knew her. We will be releasing balloons to celebrate her life. Katie's parents, Paul and Alison Rough, would like to thank everyone for their kind words and ongoing support through this very difficult and sad time."

People are asked to meet at 3.30pm on Westfield Park, beside Westfield Primary School, where Katie was a pupil. The balloons will be released at 4pm.

People will be asked to make a £1 donation per balloon and there will be the option to write a message.

Katie's family have deliberately chosen bio-degradable balloons to avoid damaging the environment.  The balloons are being provided free by Jayne Lawn  of Balloons Above, based in Strensall.

Morrisons of Acomb and Sainsburys and Asda at Monks Cross have donated pens and children's items for the occasion.

The investigation into Katie's death continues. A 15-year-old girl has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon, namely a Stanley knife, and appeared before York magistrates on Wednesday then before a Leeds Crown Court via video link on Friday.
