A GROUP in York is bidding to bag a massive cash boost to kickstart their after-school gardening club for children.

Greenfields – School and Community Garden, a school and community garden project, could receive a grant of £5,000, £2,000 or £1,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award.

This month shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Greenfields Garden is one of the groups on the shortlist.

The group, which has been running since 2011, is turning a disused former school playing field off Haxby Road in York into a community garden and orchard.

The Tesco Bags of Help funding will be used to start up the Green Fingers Club to get youngsters interested in gardening.

The aim behind this is to train parent volunteers at Haxby Road Primary Academy, which is part of Ebor Academy Trust, to run after-school gardening clubs for children.

Voting is now open in stores until January 28.
