THE father of missing York chef Claudia Lawrence will visit Parliament again today, to try and close a legal loophole and help the families of missing people.

Peter Lawrence will join Thirsk and Malton MP Kevin Hollinrake, who will speak to the House of Commons and call for changes to the Guardianship laws to be introduced.

The changes, labelled Claudia’s Law, were proposed in March 2015 and received cross party support as it would allow the families of missing people to deal with their loved ones’ financial affairs.

However, the Bill has come no closer to being passed into legislation in the last two years, and Mr Lawrence has called for changes to be made as the eighth anniversary of his daughter’s disappearance approaches.

Mr Lawrence has worked with the charity Missing People to spearhead the campaign for Guardianship laws, and will be in the gallery of the House of Commons today for the presentation, which Mr Hollinrake will give as a ten-minute Rule Bill.

The new bill will create a new legal status of Guardian of the property and affairs of anyone missing for 90 days or longer, to the families and friends of missing people to manage their affairs.

Mr Hollinrake is Claudia’s mother Joan’s local MP, while Mr Lawrence’s local MP Julian Sturdy, and York Central MP Rachael Maskell have also lent their support to the bill.

She said: “Since Claudia has gone missing her parents have campaigned to change in the law so other families are can put their estate in order.

"This bill will help so many other families as well as honouring Claudia Lawrence.”
