GRANTS of up to £5,000 are up for grab to cut waste and increase recycling.

City of York Council has a £30,000 pot of cash, and is inviting groups to bid for up to £5,000, to try to cut down the amount of rubbish going into landfills.

Cllr Andrew Waller, York’s executive member for the environment, said: “This is a great opportunity to help communities and groups reduce waste and encourage re-use. By providing the funding to enable them to get their campaigns off the ground, this will really help us make York the ‘Greenest City in the North’.”

The money will support things like reducing waste going into the grey bin; encouraging reuse, repair and recycling or to cutting food waste; or reducing carbon emissions by composting garden waste or switching transport.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday, January 20. For information visit www.york.gov.uk/recyclingfund or email ycc@york.gov.uk, putting “York Community Recycling Fund” in the subject line.
