SELBY Town will be eyeing a return to good league form after nearly pulling off a notable cup shock in midweek.

The Robins, with only one win in their last six Northern Counties East League division one games, endured a luckless exit on penalties from the West Riding County FA County Cup - drawing 2-2 in their third round tie at Vanarama National League side Guiseley, only to lose 4-2 in the shoot-out.

They had come close to a winner in normal time, too, when Guiseley's former York City striker, Michael Rankine, hit his own bar with a miscued clearance from a corner.

The home side featured three of the team that had hammered York 6-1 earlier in the league campaign, in Jake Lawlor and ex-Minstermen Rankine and Adam Boyes.

Eight of the 15 on duty in midweek have played National League football this year.

One of them, Joel Logan, gave them an early lead with a penalty, picking himself up to score after being tripped in the area.

But Selby equalised before half-time through Jason Crisp, also from the spot, after Lawlor had brought down Jordan Emery just inside the box

Boyes hit the bar for the hosts but it was Selby who went ahead just after the hour mark, when the ball looped up from an intended clearance from a corner and Gary Lumley headed it home at the far post.

The Robins' joy was short-lived, though, as Rankine pressured a defender and the ball fell to Boyes who fired in from 12 yards.

The same combination came close again before Rankine almost scored at the wrong end.

Guiseley created further chances but, like in their previous round win over Albion Sports, the tie went to penalties.

Selby missed their second and third attempts and, with Boyes, Lawlor, Rankine and Logan all scoring, it was Guiseley who progressed to a quarter-final against Farsley Celtic in January.

The Robins, having slipped to 11th in NCEL division one, host Brigg Town tomorrow aiming to climb back into the play-off picture.

Knaresborough Town will likewise hope to close the gap to the play-offs as they host lowly Rossington Main.
