A YORK-BASED film maker and CGI artist is using computers to show how local railway lines - such as the York-Selby route - would have looked in the bygone days of steam.

Dave Thorp has created computer-generated railway footage to add an extra dimension to Series 4 of TV's ‘Walks Around Britain.'

He said the complex animation process required accurate computer models of locomotives, carriages and trains and filmed background shots of existing, derelict line before painstaking computer work removed trees and shrubs.

York Press:

“Across Britain there are thousands of miles of abandoned railway lines available to walkers and cyclists," he said.

“This new dimension to the next series shows not just the walk, but the effect that railways had on local communities and economies.

"Railways really were the first social network, so it’s sad to see how many railways have fallen into decline. I hope our forthcoming series will offer an insight into how these lines might have looked before their closure.”
