A QUICK-thinking security guard at a York council building has saved the lives of two people in as many months.

Paul Cuthbertson has stepped in with First Aid skills to help people in life-threatening situations on two different occasions.

Paul, who works for security contractors Gough and Kelly, is their site manager at City of York Council’s West Offices HQ.

The first time his first-aid skills were called upon was when a council worker had a heart attack in the office, and Paul became a life saver once again just a month later when another member of staff went into anaphylactic shock after a severe allergic reaction.

Operations manager Richard Cuff, who leads Gough and Kelly’s security operations on site for City of York Council, praised Paul’s quick-thinking and his life-saving actions.

He said: “Paul is responsible for general safety, access control and welfare of staff and visitors on site – as well as being our go-to life saver.

“He takes great pride in his work and is a highly-valued member of the team.”

The council has also stepped in to recognise Paul’s fantastic contributions, by giving him a special “Exceptional Employee” award, to thank him for his actions.

Council chief executive Mary Weastell added: “The council is very fortunate to have Paul working in the building.

“His dedication and skill in his role has helped numerous employees and residents feel safe.

“Paul is excellent with customers and has repeatedly gone over and above the remit of his job.”
