ALMOST every type of crime has increased in East Yorkshire in the last year, according to new figures.

A report due before East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s safer and stronger communities overview and scrutiny subcommittee next week shows there were 14,802 recorded crimes in the region in the 12 months to October, up 13 per cent from 13,053 the previous year.

Crimes to rise included:

  • Violent incidents in which nobody was injured: up by 42.2 per cent to 2,189, with 174 reported in August 2016, 208 in September and 269 in October
  • Violent incidents which involved injuries: up by 16.5 per cent, from 1,554 to 1,811, with 174 reported in October 2016 alone
  • Sexual offences: up by 23 per cent, from 420 to 517, with 41 in August, 34 in September, and 63 in October.
  • Shoplifting: up 24 per cent
  • Theft from individuals: up by just over 27 per cent
  • Burglary of homes: up by one per cent from 666 to 673
  • Non-domestic burglary: up by 16 per cent, from 1,334 to 1,550.

The only type of crime to have fallen in the same period were vehicle offences, which dropped from 1,025 to 1,005, a reduction of just under two per cent.

Humberside Police said they would not comment on the increase in advance of the council meeting, which is open to the general public and will take place at Beverley County Hall, Cross Street, on Thursday, December 8, from 10am.
