PLANS have been submitted to convert a pub in Selby town centre into a wine bar.

The owner of the Black-A-Moor Head in Finkle Street, Ian Campey, has submitted an application to Selby District Council requesting permission to convert the pub and first floor living accommodation into a new wine bar.

A Grade II-listed building, the site is an independent unit but was knocked through into the Black-A-Moor pub in the late 1980s, and earlier this year permission was granted for it to be recreated as a retail unit, with residential accommodation above.

A report submitted with the plans said: “The applicant has, however, identified that there is demand for a wine bar in this location.

“The application primarily relates to the fitting out of the unit as a drinking establishment, with bar facilities provided over two floors and an office at second floor level. There would also be a host of internal works that would be required.”

York Press:

The report states the scheme would lead to “a smaller public house created that would be financially competitive in the market”, and the proposal “would ensure that the building does not fall in to a state of disrepair or dereliction, which is of prime importance”.

While some changes would take place inside the building, including the removal of and changes to stud walls and creation of new toilet facilities, the exterior of the pub is set to remain much the same.

However, three skylights would be installed in the roof of the building, which would not be directly connected to the existing neighbouring public house.

A decision is due on the plans when the submission goes before Selby District Council’s planning committee in January.
