SPORTS facilities at the former Burnholme Community College need £200,000 of urgent repairs, it has been revealed.

The old schools sports hall has a leaking roof, and repairs so far have not been able to solve the problem. At the same time, the building needs better storage facilities, so more groups can use the space.

The news has come in report to City of York Council’s executive, which is due to meet next week.

Councillors will be asked to sanction £200,000 of capital spending to make the repairs, as well as £4.7 million to fund building work on a new Tang Hall library.

The meeting will see councillors receive updates on various parts of the Older People’s Accommodation - of which the Burnhome site is part.

Reports reveal the project managers do not yet have a care home company signed up to build and run a new home on the site, but they want to make a start on the rest of the Burnholme development to make it a more attractive for investors.

They also show that key Department for Education approval has still not been confirmed for some of the old school fields to be sold off for housing development, and without it the plans will not be able to go head.

At the same time, project managers are asking for permission to start looking for a care home company to build and run a new home at the old Lowfields school site in Acomb, and to take on the existing Haxby Hall.

At Haxby Hall, councillors will be asked to hand the existing council run home over to a private company, on the understanding the company builds a new, modern, care home on the same site.

The Lowfield plans are similar to the Burnholme scheme, including a new care home, health centre, homes for older people, and community space including allotments, and housing that could come from a private developer or the council itself.
