IT’S official - we can reveal the best fish and chip shop in York.

Out of 28 nominated fish and chip shops, readers have voted The Scrap Box, off Hull Road, near Dunnington as The Press Best.

It’s a triumph for the restaurant, which opened four months ago and already has many loyal customers.

Aman Dhesi and his brother Gavin - who already run the popular Brockfield Fisheries in Huntington - launched the new restaurant in a formerly unused building in the Checkered Layby on the A1079.

They said they are delighted to have been named the best in York, especially when facing tough competition.

Aman said: “It’s a real honour to win this as it was voted for by the public.

“It’s a reflection of the high quality we strive for and this after only four months of trading.

“We would like to thank our customers for voting for us.”

Scotts Fish and Chips in Bilbrough have been named runners up.

Secrets to The Scrap Box’s success include using the best quality ingredients and frying in beef dripping, Aman said.

The brothers said they have honed their skills at Brockfield Fisheries over the past three years.

The Huntington shop featured in The Press last year when celebrity chef Tony Singh visited the shop for the day to spice up traditional favourites.

Aman and Gav have no current plans to expand further, but want to focus on the two shops they have, Aman said.

In total, 28 fish and chip shops were nominated for the awards. The public then voted for their favourite through the newspaper, online and by text.

Kate Neighbour, organiser of The Press competition, said: “We had a fantastic response.

“Congratulations to The Scrap Box, who were our clear winners.”

The Press Best fish and chips awards follow the success of a similar Press Best competition to find York’s best hairdressers.
