YORK residents are being warned of a scam involving emails being sent to local people which claim to offer a council tax rebate.
City of York Council said a number of residents had received emails claiming to be from HMRC and saying they were owed a refund on their council tax, and then inviting them to click on a link to submit their personal details.
Another scam involved claims to be able to reduce council tax bills for an upfront fee.
“Please never give out your bank details or make an upfront payment to anyone who calls or emails you unexpectedly,” said council leader David Carr.
