TRAFFIC in a York street has become so bad, ambulances and HGVs have become stuck, residents claim.

Thanks to motorists parking on both sides of Dodsworth Avenue, local resident Robin Rawson said the problem had become so bad it was only a matter of time before angry drivers came to blows.

Mr Rawson said the issue had become worse in recent months, after parking in nearby streets was changed to residents only, and he was waiting to see what City of York Council could do about it.

He said: “We seem to be the local town “park and stride” scheme. There’s an awful lot of city centre workers parking down our road and since the university came back students are parking here too.

“Both sides of the road and in between peoples’ driveways and children are finding it hard to cross the road with no sight of ongoing traffic. Only one lane of traffic can come in any direction at any time and it is frequently gridlocked. Two buses got completely locked in the other day and one driver had to get out and get the other one through. We’ve had an ambulance with blue lights on get stuck.”

The matter was put to the council several months ago, and consultation on the best way forward was carried out earlier this year.

A council spokeswoman said the results meant more work was needed before action could take place.

She said: “Unfortunately there was no clear consensus on the way forward but we continue to work with the residents association to progress solutions to some of their key concerns. A meeting is being arranged to discuss in more detail. We can confirm that parking in the Dodsworth Avenue and Pottery Lane area is being reviewed this year.”
