ONE of biggest archaeological organisations in the country is seeking a new chair.

York Archaeological Trust, which employs over 200 staff across archaeological offices in York, Glasgow, Nottingham and Sheffield, as well as owning five city-centre attractions in York, is looking to appoint a replacement within the coming weeks to take over from Terence Suthers, who is stepping down.

David Jennings, chief executive of York Archaeological Trust, said: “Terry has done a fantastic job and during his tenure he has made a huge difference to the Trust.

"He has implemented key objectives including: expanding the number of offices the trust operates in from one to four; adding two new visitor attractions to the trust; and campaigning for the re-imagining of the Jorvik Viking Centre following the flooding at Christmas 2015, which caused catastrophic damage.”

Terry said: “Now the re-build of Jorvik Viking Centre is well underway, it is the right time to pass the reins to an ambitious chair with an international vision who can drive the Trust forwards and expand its aim of delivering accessible archaeology for all.

"I have been proud of what the trust has achieved during my time as chair, especially with the difficult market conditions that have affected archaeological practices up and down the country.

"I wish the ambitious and talented team at the trust all the best for the future.”
