VISITORS to York's city archives will have improved access to historic maps, thanks to new work by staff.

The team at Explore York in Library Square are creating laminated handling copies of many of their old maps, some of which had become very fragile.

It will mean hundreds more maps becoming publicly available.

Archivist Laura Yeoman said the work would mean around 400 maps would eventually be accessible to the public, rather than 100 as at present, and said they would be harder wearing.
