A care worker is off the roads for two years because an off-duty police officer spotted her driving erratically on a major road.

Kimberley Brown, 39, was more than three times the drink drive limit, said Martin Butterworth, prosecuting at York Magistrates Court.

The off-duty officer contacted police control, who directed an on-duty officer to where Brown was. She was stopped and gave a breathalayser reading of 104 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Brown, of Eversley Mount, Sherburn-in-Elmet, pleaded guilty to drink driving on the A162 on October 8 and was ordered to do 60 hours’ unpaid work. She was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £85 statutory surcharge and was banned from driving for two years.

For her, Liam Hassan said she had been to a friend because she was being harassed at work by a member of staff who has since dismissed. She had drunk some wine, but had thought she was safe to drive and was very embarrassed about being in court.

She had physical health problems for which she was receiving medication and which could explain the high reading. She also suffered from depression and had a demanding job working 12-hour shifts caring for people with learning difficulties.

Mr Butterworth said the off-duty officer was driving behind Brown’s Vectra when she saw the erratic driving and contacted her on-duty colleagues.
