DIFFERENT religions in York are preparing for a series of Interfaith Week events next month.

Each event is intended to help people discover more about the city’s diverse and vibrant faith communities and their beliefs, traditions, values and contribution to 21st century York, said spokesman Mark Cosens.

Events include an Interfaith service and meal on the morning of Sunday November 20, entitled:“It’s not about what you believe but the love behind it’, at the Unitarian Chapel in St Saviourgate, with a bring and share vegetarian meal at 12.15pm.

There is an opportunity to learn about Islam during an open day at York Mosque in Bull Lane between 10am and 6pm on Monday November 14.

On Saturday November 19, there will be an explanatory Liberal Jewish Shabbat Service, mainly in English and including an opportunity to learn about Jewish beliefs, traditions and rituals and to explore the relationship of Judaism and Jewish prayer with that of other faiths, at 11am at Lower school Hall, All Saint’s Roman Catholic School, Mill Mount.

At 7.30pm on Thursday November 17, people can visit the Bar Convent and its new Living Heritage Exhibition, with a short introductory talk on the convent and religious persecution.

A major event on Tuesday November 15 is The Art of Disagreeing Badly: Religious Dispute in Early Modern Europe’at Old Palace, York Minster, including an exhibition and a panel discussion on ‘Disagreeing well - does religious belief help or hinder?’ involving speakers including Rabbi Benjy Rickman, Dr Zaza El Sheikh and Rev. Canon Dr Christopher Collingwood.
