A CHRISTMAS tree grower from York is set to compete in a nationwide competition to find the pick of the best festive trees.

Oliver Combe, who runs Wigginton-based York Christmas Trees, will be among Britain’s top growers pitching their best Nordman, Spruce or Fir as part of an annual event staged by the British Christmas Tree Growers Association(BCTGA).

The contest takes place today in Swansea, West Glamorgan and will see members have their trees judged by fellow growers.

Oliver Combe said: "I am really pleased to be entering the annual BCTGA competition. It’s a great way of being able judge our trees alongside those grown by our peers.

“It would be great to think we could claim victory on behalf of our region as we grow excellent trees in Yorkshire and the recognition of our year-round work would be fantastic.”
