SOUTHPORT have won only one of their last 13 league games but moved off the bottom of the National League this weekend courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Sutton United.

A Football League club for 57 years, they were the last club to be demoted from the league under re-election procedures when replaced by Wigan Athletic in 1978.

Steve Burr took over as the club’s manager nine games ago following the sacking of former York City striker Andy Bishop.

Under Burr, the Sandgrounders have picked up only six points from a possible 24 but reached the first round of FA Cup after victory over Chester City.

That result not only earned the club £12,500 in prize money but also the additional windfall of £67,500 when BT Sport chose their first round tie at home to League One Fleetwood Town for live broadcast.

Former Halifax Town striker Burr, 56, has been busy in the transfer market since his arrival – signing seven new players including Jordan Lussey who played one game on loan for York last season.

Lussey, 21, made his one and only appearance for the Minstermen during the early days of Jackie McNamara’s managerial reign – but it was an afternoon the former Liverpool youth team captain will probably want to forget.

York suffered a 5-1 loss against Altrincham on Saturday November 28, 2015 – equalling the club’s biggest home defeat for 58 years.

Lussey, who had arrived on loan from Bolton Wanderers, made his Football League debut at right back but was given a torrid time by Altrincham winger Sean McConville and never played for York again.

He returned to the Reebok Stadium with a groin injury and was released by the Lancashire club following relegation to League One this summer.

Goalkeeper Magnus Norman, 19, is a former England under-18 international on loan from Championship club Fulham.

Midfielder Nathan Ferguson is on a one-month loan from Port Vale while midfielder Declan Weeks, 20, was snapped up after being released by Wolves. Defender Mark O’Brien is on a three-month loan from Luton Town and former Stoke City defender Bobby Moseley was signed on a non-contract basis.

Former Everton youngster Ryan Higgins, 22, joined the club after spells with Birmingham City and Telford United.

Burr boosted his backroom staff this month by appointing assistant-manager Keith Briggs who he had worked with previously at Stalybridge Celtic and Kidderminster.

Full back Josh Thompson, meanwhile, moved from Stockport County to Scottish giants Celtic for £250,000 as a teenager and spent three years at Parkhead before returning south of the border with Portsmouth.

If Southport avoid defeat, they will have gone unbeaten for three games for the first time this season. A win could see them move level on points with 20th placed Woking - just a point behind York.

Both Richard Brodie and Alex Whittle are returning to one of their former clubs tonight and both are likely to be given positive receptions.

Striker Brodie was Southport’s leading marksman with 14 goals in the 2014-15 season.

He had joined the club, initially on loan, in December 2013 and moved to Aldershot at the start of the following season.

Whittle spent only two months with Southport at the end of last season but still played an important role in the club’s successful battle against relegation.
