THE market in Acomb is set to become permanent, thanks to increased footfall from local customers.

Acomb Market has been running on a trial basis in recent months, but is set to receive approval on a permanent basis at a council meeting next week, where Councillor Keith Aspden will consider proposals to give it a permanent footing by amending York’s 600-year-old Markets Charter.

Since local traders group Acomb Alive! gained almost £18,000 to promote Front Street with the market in June, an increase in shopper footfall has been reported in Acomb, along with a rise in the number of market stalls taking part.

Councillor Sue Hunter, chair of Acomb Alive!, said: "Acomb Alive! is all about getting the area buzzing and encouraging residents to shop locally. I am delighted with how the Market has been going and this will give us an extra boost.

"The Market makes a big contribution to having a busy local shopping area. There is more work ahead too and we should look at how we can make the area more attractive and accessible. Thank you to all the shoppers and traders who have helped to make the events such a success."

The Markets Charter currently does not allow any markets within 6.66 miles of the Shambles Market, unless it is on a trial basis or without a licence from the council, and Acomb will now follow Haxby as the second area in York to be given the right to hold a market following an amendment to the charter.

Councillor Keith Aspden, executive member for economic development, said: "The Acomb Market has gone from strength to strength over the last few months, and will be a key part of a thriving local economy in Acomb. I am pleased to see progress on making the Council more business-friendly."
