BRAVE a visit to York Castle Museum this half term - if you dare.

The museum is shedding light on past and present superstitions with spooky stories from Saturday, October 22, until Sunday, October 30.

Visitors will find out why it’s bad luck to break a mirror or spill salt but lucky to touch wood. You will also be able to try making a ‘witch ball’, a decorated glass bauble used to trap evil spirits in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Lucy Knock, assistant curator of social history (learning), said: “Hallowe’en is just around the corner; get into the spooky spirit with costumed guides telling tales of the history of the museum and the superstitions behind the artefacts.

“We have Spooky Stories, ghost stories from York and Yorkshire for the older children in York Castle Prison and poems and stories such as Revolting Rhymes, Room on the Broom and Don’t Step on the Crack in the Toy Gallery for younger children.

“We will be looking at some well-known superstitions and making a ‘witch ball’ that you can take home for protection on Halloween night!”

Sessions are daily.
